This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Severino Baraldi.

Almost 150,000 men of Irish descent were recruited into the Union army during the American civil war, many of them into the special Irish Brigade. Both sides played on Irish nationalism - posters appeared reminding expatriate Irishmen of victories over the English; but the outcome of the war did nothing for Irish freedom.

Inset shows one of Ireland's famous fighting sons, Henry Knox, who rose to become Commander-in-Chief of the American army in 1783.

This is the original artwork for illustration on p10 of Look and Learn issue no 952 (19 April 1980).
