This is the unique original Gouache painting by Graham Coton.

Les Staudacher bails out of Miss Stars and Stripes II when the rudder assembly comes loose. This was one of several attempts at the water speed record by the boats owner Robert B Evans.

The accident occurred on 16th May 1963. Staudacher broke nearly all the bones in his body as he bailed out at a speed of approximately 280mph, which was about 80 mph faster than the record at the time. The boat ended up in the woods that skirt Lake Hubbard in Texas.

Dramatic artwork as ever by Graham Coton. Published in Speed and Power 1975.
