This is the unique original Gouache painting by Cecil Doughty.

Admiral Byng started out as a cabin boy when he was just 13. By the time the Seven Years War broke out he was a full Admiral. However he failed to engage with enemy French ships in Gibraltar and was Court Martialled.

We see the Admiral in civilian clothes being march through the streets of Portsmouth. He was shot on board the Monarque. He had been charged with "Failing to do his utmost". The court pleaded for clemency even though they found him guilty. King George II was hearing nothing of it. Neither was the crowd who taunted him with shouts of "Swing, Swing, Admiral Byng".

Artwork published in Look and Learn issue 171, 24th April 1965.
