Throughout the night soldiers moved soundlessly so as not to awaken the sleeping city. This was the prelude to the terrible events of The St Bartholomew's Day massacre of 24th August 1472 when as many as 40,000 Protestant Huguenots were killed. The young King Charles IX was influenced by his scheming mother Catherine de Medici.

The Story of France: Massacre in the Streets. From Look and Learn no. 671 (23 November 1974).
