Mighty Monarchs: He Built the Eighth Wonder of the World. King Philip of Spain. Philip of Spain had arrived in England to meet his bride to be Mary Tudor at Winchester. The weather was about as promising as the reaction of the locals.

The Spanish Match is the term used to describe the circumstances behind the marriage between Mary I and Philip of Spain, the future king of Spain on the abdication of Charles V.

The Spanish Match was not popular in England and was one of the reasons for the Wyatt Rebellion of 1554.
