This is the unique original Watercolour painting by Ron Embleton.

Augustin de Iturbide was sent to Mexico by the Spanish clergy to crush the Mexican rebels in 1817. Instead he had desires to make himself the first Emperor of Mexico.

He made an allegiance with Guerro and conquered all the rebels and entered Mexico City. He created such a shambles of the economy that a military government took over and he was sent back to Spain in 1823.

He returned to Mexico the following year and marched to Padilla with the intention of taking over but he was arrested and executed by firing squad the same day. Embleton's painting graphically shows his arrest.

Original watercolour illustration produced to illustrate a feature in Look and Learn magazine January 15th 1972.
