Originally Kidd, a clergyman's son, was sent to the Indian Ocean in 1696 with a privateer's commission to seize pirates or enemy vessels there. His crew are supposed to have persuaded him to join the Madagascan pirates. who is reputed to have buried more treasure than any other pirate captain.
