This is the unique original Gouache painting by Ron Embleton.

Men of the Jolly Roger: The First Buccaneers. Shows an early settlement on the island of Tortuga, an initial base for attacking the Spanish fleet.

Buccaneers and Freebooters fought together under the name Brethren of the Coast to protect the island from Spanish soldiers. In 1630 the island became the first pirate republic.

This is the original artwork for illustration on p28 of Look and Learn issue no 163.
