This is the unique original Gouache painting by Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone.

A golden haired Perseus stands before Goddess Athena who presents him with a polished shield to aid his impending confrontation with the Gorgon Medusa. Already equipped with a knapsack gifted to him by Hesperides to safely store the Gorgon's head, holding an adamantine sword, and wearing winged sandals borrowed from Hermes, the final piece of his armoury will come in the guise of a helm of darkness given to him by Hades.

This painting by the twins Janet and Anne Grahame Johnstone has a comforting air of lightness, befitting such a meeting with Athena. The artists would pass the illustration board between them, each painting until they were satisfied with the result, each adding their touch of flair and mastery.

First published in Finding Out Magazine, and subsequently in Robert Lancelyn Green's rare book 'Tales of The Greeks and Trojans', this painting has been cut to shape by the publisher, so has a curved cut around the sickle Perseus holds.
