This is the Signed unique original Pen & Ink drawing by Robert Wilson Matthews.

This illustration from 'A Child's History Of England' depicts The Gregorian Mission (596 AD). St Gregory embarked on a mission to convert Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. This panel shows him freeing British slaves from The Roman Empire.

The signature is rare in that it deviates from Matthews' usual style and placement.

Robert Wilson Matthews born in Edinburgh in 1880 began as an illustrator in the early 20th century. An alumni of The Edinburgh College of Art he is best known for his illustrations in H.W. Meikle's 'Story Of England' (Oliver & Boyd) and the illustrated works of Alexandre Dumas (Collins Clear Press). Matthews took a medical commission circa 1928 and was one of the most well respected medical illustrators of the 20th century.
