The third episode of the series about life along the River Severn takes us from a few miles north of Shrewsbury down to the famous Iron Bridge. In 1403 over 1,00 men died at the Battle of Shrewsbury when Henry IV won a victory over Henry Hotspur. The city was a Loyalist stronghold during the Civil War until it was captured by the Roundheads in 1645.

The figure to the right is the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge who preached at St. Chad's before leaving the Ministry. The Iron Bridge was cast in 1779 and was the first such bridge in Britain. It spans the Severn at a point where the river is less than 100 feet across.
