In this episode of the series the river begins to widen and meander considerably, also strong currents make it dangerous for shipping. This is why the Gloucester - Sharpness canal was built.

Famous locals include Isaac Pitman the inventor of shorthand who opened a school in the area. King George I was for a brief time Churchwarden at St Mary of Kingswood. The nuclear power plant at Oldbury seemed to promise much for the future; likewise the suspension bridge that links England to Wales (and was opened the previous year in 1966).

In 1873 a railway tunnel was started which took fourteen years to build. Designers Charles Richardson and Sir John Hawkshaw are featured as are two dinosaurs representing the Bone Bed at nearby Aust - close to the suspension bridge.
