This is the unique original Watercolour painting by James E McConnell.

A dramatic scene and a fine example of narrative painting from James McConnell. The original caption reads: "As Talleyrand, now an elderly statesman, left the church, he was attacked by a man dressed in black and wearing the Legion of Honour.

The stolen jewels belonged to Queen Catherine of Westphalia, sister in-law to Napoleon Bonaparte who had abdicated on 11 April 1814 leaving his relatives to fend for themselves. Catherine had been on her way to Germany with a fortune when agents of the new Government under Talleyrand stopped the coach.
