This is the unique original Mixed Media art by Ron Embleton.

A charming painting used to illustrate the book Children's Favourite Stories, by Hans Christian Andersen, retold by Lornie Leete-Hodge (London, Dean, 1983).

A Fir tree longs to grow up after hearing of the adventures his taller neighbours are taken on (after the are chopped down). Eventually his turn comes to be chopped down and he is taken to a rich merchants house and set up as a Christmas Tree.

After a while he is discarded and put into the loft, where he enjoys retelling his experiences to the mice. A while later, he is discarded outside, and before he is burnt he realises his folly of his thinking the grass is always greener:

'Tis over -- 'tis past!" said the poor Tree. "Had I but rejoiced when I had reason to do so! But now 'tis past, 'tis past!"

This original painting is from the Ron Embleton family collection.
